The Missing Ledger Behind the Kansas Stadium Turnstiles

An empty desk in the field house and a ledger with missing entries have campus investigators asking who really runs the numbers in Lawrence.

Rain was coming down hard over the stadium parking lot, slicking the asphalt where a delivery truck usually idles at dawn. But the truck wasn't there. Neither was the second-string bagman who usually signs for the extra pads and tape before the quarter begins. Out on the concourse, the stadium lights buzzed with a low, nervous hum while the morning crew swept up peanut shells from the night before.

Down in the basement offices, the administrative staff is keeping mum. You ask a simple question about where the visiting scout's playbook went, and suddenly everyone is staring intensely at their coffee cups or checking the time on a pocket watch that isn't ticking. It's the kind of silence you only get when a syndicate capo gives the word to button up.

Athletic directors play it close to the vest, but when entire crates of game film vanish from the back room right before a weekend kickoff, you don't need a degree in forensic accounting to know someone is skimming off the top of the depth chart. The referees won't talk, the ticket window operators are suddenly hard of hearing, and the whole operation smells like cheap tobacco and burnt toast.

If the conference office thinks they can sweep this little bookkeeping discrepancy under the rug by Friday night, they've got another thing coming. I've seen enough crooked games to know when the books are being cooked, and this town is due for an audit whether the brass likes it or not.

Keep your trench coat dry and your gat oiled, because until someone starts naming names down by the loading dock, this entire operation remains under strict suspicion.
