A Very Hesitant Inquiry Concerning the Mid-October Disappearance of the Fellowship Hall Folding Tables

An investigative look into the mysterious vacancy of the lower corridor storage closet on the Tulsa campus during a quiet autumn bye week.

It is entirely possible, of course, that I am simply looking in the wrong place, or perhaps misremembering the exact configuration of the shelving units down by the auxiliary gymnasium. Still, as Wednesday afternoon settles over the Mabee Center during a rather uneventful stretch of the autumn calendar, one cannot help but notice a quiet, persistent vacancy. The rolling cart that usually holds the extra sleeves of paper cups, the mild-blend sweetener packets, and the three-ring binder of pre-game devotional readings has vanished. It is not my intention to cause any sort of fuss or to suggest that anyone has been derelict in their organizational duties, but the hallway feels notably lighter, almost as though a small, supportive presence has quietly slipped out the side door without saying goodbye.

Over the past forty-eight hours, several low-volume inquiries directed toward the equipment managers and the student assistants have yielded little more than polite shrugs and soft-spoken assurances that everything is under control. This is, naturally, completely fine. One does not wish to interrogate hardworking young people who are simply trying to get through a mid-week practice schedule without any extra administrative overhead. Yet, the absence remains. For a program that prides itself on maintaining a steady spiritual baseline, the sudden lack of a designated hydration station for quiet post-rebound contemplation feels like a gentle, if slightly confusing, redirection from above. One wonders if perhaps the supplies were moved to accommodate a visiting youth group or perhaps simply misplaced during the recent floor waxing.

Of course, nobody wants to point fingers or imply that a lack of communicative transparency is symptomatic of a broader organizational drift. The coaching staff has enough on their minds without someone coming by with a clipboard to count Styrofoam cups. Still, when the morning coffee pot is left unplugged and the spare clipboards are discovered stacked face-down in the corner of the film room, a sensitive soul might perceive a tiny, whispered warning about the state of our collective preparedness. It is almost as if the universe is testing our patience, or perhaps reminding us that we ought to spend less time worrying about administrative inventory and more time examining our inner spirits. Even so, a simple note on the bulletin board would have saved everyone a great deal of quiet, agonizing speculation.

We must remember, after all, that basketball is ultimately a game of grace, both on the hardwood and in the hospitality room. If the cups have been permanently relocated to the second-floor storage closet behind the coaches' offices, one accepts this logistical pivot with a humble heart and a minimum of internal friction. We shall simply make do with the ceramic mugs in the kitchenette, provided someone remembers to wash them afterward. It is a minor cross to bear, surely, in the grand scheme of a lengthy collegiate season that has not yet truly begun.

If it wouldn't be too dreadfully much trouble at all, and only if everyone feels completely comfortable and hasn't had an overly stressful week with the conditioning drills, might we perhaps consider a tiny, very brief moment of quiet reflection—perhaps just a short, voluntary prayer circle near the water fountain around three o'clock, though absolutely no pressure whatsoever if people are busy or prefer to stretch on their own?
